is sitting just to the west of washington state. and all these storms are streaming in right into northern california. and we are looking at moderate rain at this time across northern california into southwestern oregon and also up in the seattle and the coast of washington state. now tomorrow we are actually going to see even heavier rain start to move in. we have already had reports of about 8 to 10 inches of rainfall already from the past few storms we've already seen. but we've also gotten reports of wind gusts up to 60 to more than 80-mile-per-hour. and we're going to see more of the same if not a little more intense as we go into sunday morning. additional rainfall totals on top of the 8 to 10 inches on the ground could be an additional 5 to 6, 7 inches of rainfall out of what we'll see tomorrow morning. we have the series of storms moving into the west coast. then it's a totally different story right in the middle of the country. we're also talking about record-break heat today. down into dallas and also into san antonio where temperatures should get into the upper 70s and lower 80s

joins us from washington. speaker boehner plans to go home to ohio today. >> reporter: that's right. he is on his way if not there already. and, you know, you talked about the word frank that was used by both parties, by the white house and by the speaker's office. just like they did over the weekend they put out identical statements, really one sentence statements. diplomatic terms, frank means not so good. and that's the same word that the speaker used a couple days ago to describe their meeting on sunday which we understand from sources was pretty tense. just the fact that they only met for 50 minutes is indicative of the fact that the meeting didn't produce very much. now i understand from democratic sources earlier in the day yesterday that they were going to try to invite the speaker over to the white house to get things moving before he went home to ohio to perhaps put a few of the spending cuts that the speaker has been demanding on the table to try to, you know, cut a -- break this deadlock. doesn't seem like they got very far. >> we've had dead locks before in washington and t

on that as that story develops. back to washington d.c. now and the back and forth over the budget crisis there taking place behind closed doors right now on capitol hill. you have negotiators from both sides trying to hammer out a deal over tax hikes and spending cuts as the clock particulars towards that fiscal cliff deadline on january 11. mike emanuel is live. we are still getting hard lines from either side about where they stand on this. what is really happening behind the closed doors? are they closer to a dole? >> reporter: jenna you're right about a lot of tough talk in public, but behind closed doors we know the president, the speaker of the house john boehner had a phone call late yesterday, the first call they had in a week. there has not been much in the way of leaks as to what was discussed. most folks on capitol hill may suggest that no leaks means they are getting down to serious movement on finding a compromise to avert the fiscal cliff. because in public the treasury secretary was asked yesterday if the administration is prepared to go over the fiscal cliff. check this out. >> is the

as the "wall street journal" nbc poll. let's go to washington to the senior congressional correspondent. dana, you talked to the two men who spent their careers in congress making deals like this. how do they pull it off? >> it was a fascinating conversation. the two men you are talking are about two former senate majority leaders. a republican and a democrat. trent lott and tom daschle. they worked on opposite sides for almost a decade. that is the question i asked. it wasn't always pretty, but how did you come up with deals when you had touch negotiations like what's going on right now. the answer was simple. talk to each other. >> i do think that they reached a point where they need to quit talking through the media. i'm talking about both parties and the leaders in congress. some of the most effective wi timth theresint or at dn least with the chief of staff and the director with our key budget people and we really talk about alternatives and hammered it out. >> this will be the test. if we reset it has to happen around the fiscal cliff first. there a lot of other issues out there that co

of "fox news sunday". maybe the worst-kept secret in washington. everybody expected it was going to be john kerry. what does he bring to this post, chris? >> well he certainly brings experience. he has been a member of the senate a long time. he is chairman as wendell said of the senate foreign relations committee. he seems to have a good working relationship between president obama and his national security team. in fact obama has used him several times as a personal envoy to deal particularly with problems in pakistan and afghanistan. it got to a point where hamid karzai, the president of afghanistan preferred to deal with john kerry, the personal envoy the president, rather than the u.s. ambassador there. his latest role had been that he played mitt romney in preparations for the presidential debates. some people said that the president didn't like the fact that he, kerry, was a little long-winded during those debate preps. obviously after the first one, president did pretty well. kerry obviously did pretty well playing romney. he will get the job which he clearly hungered for
